Sorting Materials into Groups

🗂️ 1. Why Do We Group Things?

Every day, we handle hundreds of different things — stones, water, paper, wood, metals, plastic, glass, and so on. These things are called materials. To make it easier to study them, scientists sort materials into groups based on their properties (characteristics).

Why grouping is useful: Think of a library — books are grouped by subject. Without groups, finding one book would take hours!

🔍 2. Properties of Materials

We can group materials based on many different properties. Let us study each property one by one:

A. Appearance — How Does It Look?

Lustre (Shininess): Some materials have a shiny, bright surface — these are called lustrous.
   Examples: Gold, silver, iron, copper, aluminium → metals are lustrous

Non-lustrous: Most non-metals are dull (not shiny).
   Examples: Wood, paper, plastic, coal, sulfur
⚠️ Tricky Point Fresh metals are lustrous, but they can become dull on exposure to air (due to oxidation). That's why old copper vessels look dark green!

B. Hardness — Is It Hard or Soft?

Diamond is the hardest natural material on Earth.

C. Soluble or Insoluble in Water?

📌 Key Difference — Solution vs Suspension Solution: A mixture where the material completely dissolves — looks clear (e.g., saltwater)
Suspension: A mixture where particles don't dissolve — looks cloudy/muddy (e.g., chalk powder + water)
The dissolved material is called the solute, the liquid it dissolves in is the solvent.

D. Floats or Sinks in Water?

Key Question: Does a heavy ship float? YES! Because the ship displaces a large amount of water — the shape matters, not just the weight.

E. Transparent, Translucent, or Opaque?

Based on how light passes through them, materials are divided into three groups:

Type What Happens to Light Examples
Transparent Light passes through completely — objects seen clearly through them Clear glass, clean water, air, spectacle glass
Translucent Some light passes through — objects seen but not clearly (blurry) Frosted glass, butter paper (tissue paper), thin cloth, wax paper
Opaque No light passes through — objects cannot be seen Wood, stone, metal, cardboard, walls, thick cloth

F. Conductors and Insulators

That's why electric wires are made of copper (conductor) and covered with plastic (insulator)!

🔬 4. One Object — Many Materials / One Material — Many Uses

Many materials → One object:
A chair can be made from: wood, plastic, metal, cane

One material → Many objects:
Plastic can be used to make: bottles, chairs, bags, toys, combs, pipes, containers

This shows that the purpose (use) of an object determines which material is the most suitable for making it. For example, a frying pan is made of metal (good heat conductor) with a plastic/wooden handle (insulator — so we don't get burned).

  1. Materials can be grouped based on: lustre, hardness, solubility, buoyancy, transparency
  2. Lustrous = shiny (metals). Non-lustrous = dull (non-metals)
  3. Soluble = dissolves in water (salt, sugar). Insoluble = does not dissolve (sand, chalk)
  4. Transparent → clear glass. Translucent → butter paper. Opaque → wood, metal
  5. Conductors = allow heat/electricity (metals). Insulators = block heat/electricity (plastic, rubber)
