🌍 1. What is a Habitat?
Every living organism (plant or animal) lives in a specific place that provides it with food, water, shelter,
and other conditions needed to survive and reproduce. This natural home/environment of an organism is called
its habitat.
Habitat = the place where an organism LIVES naturally
- A fish lives in water → its habitat is the aquatic (water) habitat
- A camel lives in the desert → its habitat is the desert habitat
- A polar bear lives in Arctic snowfields → its habitat is the polar habitat
- A squirrel lives in forests → its habitat is the terrestrial (land) habitat
🌿 2. Components of a Habitat — Biotic and Abiotic
A habitat is made up of two types of components:

Habitats on Earth are broadly classified into two groups:
A. Terrestrial Habitats (Land)
- Forests: Dense trees, high rainfall, many animals and birds
- Grasslands: Open areas with grass; antelopes, lions, elephants
- Deserts: Very little rainfall, extreme heat by day and cold at night; camels, cacti
- Mountains: Cold temperatures, snow; yaks, pine trees, rhododendrons
- Polar regions: Extremely cold, icy; polar bears, penguins, walruses
B. Aquatic Habitats (Water)
- Freshwater: Rivers, ponds, lakes — frogs, freshwater fish, water lily, lotus
- Seawater (Marine): Oceans and seas — sharks, whales, dolphins, sea anemones, coral

- Coastal/Estuarine: Where river meets sea (estuaries) — mangrove trees, crabs,
crocodiles
🐪 4. Adaptation — How Organisms Suit Their Habitat
Over thousands of years, organisms develop special features (in body shape, behaviour, internal processes)
that help them survive in their habitat. These special features are called adaptations.
Key Idea: Adaptations are NOT learned — they are inherited features that
have evolved over generations to suit a specific environment.

C. Adaptations in Mountain Animals (e.g., Snow Leopard, Yak)
- Thick fur/hair: Traps body heat, acts as insulation against the extreme cold
- Yak's large lungs: At high altitudes, oxygen is less — large lungs take in more air
per breath
- Wide hooves of Snow leopard: Work like snowshoes to walk on snow without sinking
- Pine trees (conifers): Needle-shaped leaves — reduce water loss and snow doesn't
pile up on thin needles
- Sloping/conical shape of mountain trees: Snow slides off easily, preventing branch
breakage
🌱 5. Characteristics of Living Organisms
What makes something "living"? Living things share certain features that non-living things do not have:

Nutrition (Food intake): All living things need food for energy and growth. Plants
make their own food (autotrophs); animals eat other organisms (heterotrophs).

Respiration: All living things break down food to release energy. They breathe in
oxygen (or use dissolved O₂) and release carbon dioxide.

Movement: All living things can move at least some parts. Animals move their whole
body; plants move their leaves and roots (though slowly).

Growth: All living things grow — they increase in size and complexity over their
lifetime.

Response to stimuli: Living things respond to changes in their environment. A plant
turns toward light (phototropism); animals run away from danger.
