??? 1. What is Garbage?
Garbage (also called waste or refuse) is any unwanted material that is thrown away. Every day, our homes,
schools, markets, factories, and hospitals generate huge amounts of garbage. Proper disposal of
garbage is essential to keep our environment healthy.
Two broad types of garbage:
- Biodegradable (Bio) waste: Waste that can be broken down by microorganisms
(bacteria, fungi) in nature. Examples: vegetable peelings, fruit scraps, tea leaves, paper, cotton
cloth, wood, food leftovers, dead leaves
- Non-biodegradable (Non-bio) waste: Waste that CANNOT be broken down by
microorganisms and remains in the environment for decades or centuries. Examples: plastic bags,
polythene, glass bottles, styrofoam, synthetic cloth, metal cans, e-waste
Biodegradable = Biology (living things) can break it down
Non-biodegradable = None of the living things can break it down
?? 2. The 3 R's � Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
The best and most sustainable approach to managing waste is following the 3 R's
principle:

REDUCE � Use LESS in the first place!
Examples: Use both sides of paper, buy only what you need, use a reusable bag instead of
plastic bags, reduce packaging, take shorter showers.

REUSE � Use items AGAIN instead of throwing them out!
Examples: Use old jars as storage containers, repair torn clothes instead of discarding, refill
water bottles, give old clothes/books to others.

RECYCLE � Convert waste into NEW useful products!
Examples: Paper recycled into new paper, glass melted into new bottles, metal recycled into new
metal, plastic recycled into bags or furniture.
Note: Recycling requires energy and processing, so Reduce and Reuse are even better!

?? 3. Composting � Turning Waste into Gold!
Composting is the process of converting biodegradable kitchen and garden waste
into a rich, dark, crumbly manure called compost, which is an excellent
natural fertilizer for plants.
How to make a Compost Pit:
- Dig a pit in a corner of the garden (about 3�3 feet)
- Add a layer of soil at the bottom
- Add biodegradable kitchen waste � vegetable/fruit peels, tea leaves, eggshells, rice water, wilted
flowers, grass clippings, paper
- Do NOT add: meat, fish, cooked oily food, or plastic
- Sprinkle water to keep it moist
- Cover with soil and dry leaves
- After 2�3 months: microorganisms decompose the waste ? it becomes dark, crumbly
compost
- Mix compost into garden soil ? plants grow better, healthier!
Vermicomposting = using earthworms (redworms) to speed up composting.
Earthworms eat biodegradable waste and their excreta (castings) is a very rich fertilizer. A small
vermicomposting box can be kept even in a balcony!
???? 4. Segregation of Waste � Separate at Source!
Before garbage can be properly managed, it must be separated (segregated) into types. This
is done using coloured bins:

Why segregate?
If all waste is mixed together, the biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste contaminate each other ?
harder to compost organic waste, harder to recycle dry waste. Segregated waste is much easier to process
properly!
?? 5. Problems Caused by Garbage
- Land pollution: Open garbage dumps are ugly and contaminate soil. Non-biodegradable
waste (plastic) stays in soil for 500+ years
- Water pollution: Garbage dumped near water bodies or on roadsides gets washed into
rivers, lakes, and oceans, harming aquatic life
- Air pollution: Burning garbage releases toxic gases and dioxins. Rotting garbage
releases methane (a greenhouse gas)
- Disease spread: Rotting garbage is a breeding ground for mosquitoes (dengue,
malaria), flies, rats � they spread diseases
- Plastic danger: Animals accidentally eat plastic bags ? die. Plastic in oceans
breaks into microplastics ? enters the food chain ? affects human health

Neither paper nor plastic bags are ideal. The best option is a reusable cloth/jute
bag � durable, biodegradable, and carries more. Carry your own bag!

Non-biodegradable: NOT broken down (plastic, glass, metal)
